Iyla is a senior who joined Speech and Debate in 10th grade. Her main event is Speech—especially oratory—with the occasional Congressional Debate. This year, she hopes to branch out into more debate events. One of her favorite memories is the annual tournament at Navajo Prep, where she prepped her speech in the back seat of the bus with Taylor Swift blasting. What she values most, though, is the S&D community and the passion she sees at practices each year. Speech and Debate has strengthened her speaking and collaboration skills, which she’ll carry beyond tournaments. Outside of the team, you can find her editing and writing for the Advocate, fighting for human rights, making art, and songwriting.
